One Life, One Chance

Occasionally it's nice to draw things completely by hand again.

Professional Project: Illustration Number Nine - Roman Army (Revisited)

I didn't like the last version. It was far too simple, I didn't spend enough time on it, just tried to get it done so I went back to it and spent more time and thought about it more. Incorporated a banner, the crossed swords & wreath, the S.P.Q.R of the Roman army, changed the 'Disobey' to simply 'Obey', added a little motto to the bottom and generally worked off of the Obey poster style and colour palette. This is a hundred times better. Aesthetically it is much more pleasing for a start, it also holds a lot more information than the previous version. It's been a good morning.

Work In Progress? The Gypsy And The Moon (Again)

Since last time I posted this I've added up extra layers of paint to most of this. The headband was originally green but it ran too much into the leaves on the rose so I switched it out to purple. The goats skull I painted in yellows and browns and then went over the top in a thin white acrylic so it's translucent. It's actually a bit whiter than it looks on the photo. I've also blocked in the background in a dark purple/dark blue/black mix to try and get it to look like a night sky, probably gonna add some stars on top of that.

Close up of the face. I'm really pleased with how the hair came out, it took a while to work over each area indivdually to get the gradients right in the seperate curls but it was definitely worth it for the effect it gives out.

Close up of the lettering. Pretty standard tattoo style script/cursive writing, which I do a lot. It's a lot harder with a paint brush than with a fineliner.

Work In Progress: The Gypsy And The Moon

So this is an extension and recreation of a piece I did on December 13th 2010. I liked the elements it had in it and I felt that it could be bigger and better and more colourful and detailed. So that's what I'm going for. I've scaled it up from A4 to a large board. Probably A1 height but a bit slimmer in width.

Drawn out in marker. Usually when I use markers everything goes horribly wrong but this seems to have gone quite well. Good strong lines.

Close up face.

Close up goat skull.

Started painting it. Acrylics. Like the blue.

More to follow.

December 26th 2010: I Stumble But Never Fall

Christmas lazyness has occured a little over the lasy couple of days. Over-indulgence causes lapses in concentration. Further ideas for Stumble shirts, obviously would need to be redrawn since it's proper rushed & sketchy. I like the idea though, which was what it was mainly about. Also really like the sentence and the composition. So not bad for a lazy effort really.

December 19th 2010: Always Looking Wretched

Lazy spree didn't last long. Nailed this one I think. Possibly my favourite of the series so far, I like the use of the banner coming across there, brings it together nicely & makes it not just a plain portrait. Gives me the opportunity to get some type in there as well which is always good. Splash of colour, flowing hair, flower, good face with the right amount of shading. Tattoo on the neck works really well I think. Don't Cry For Me. I don't know why I picked "Wretched" for the title. Just seemed to fit while I was looking at it.

December 13th 2010: The Moon And The Gypsy

Stumble. I like gypsy heads. Think this ones pretty good. I was going to do just a quick sketch with a thin pen line over the top, but then I got involved in it and got carried away and added all the extra stuff and the shading and stuff. I like the moon, he's way cool. He looks like he's being dissaproving though.

December 11th 2010: Half Past Eleven

Time is of the essence. Like this a lot actually, interesting. Good chain I think. Neat. Bit of an odd composition maybe, but would make a cool part to a sleeve of something.

November 27th 2010: I'll Be Dead, But Never Dying

Quick smash up of a tattoo design, obviously not drawn equal sidedly, with colour, decent text or anything... but it's a rough idea of where things would be. Like it. Frank Turner Hardcore. Yeyah.

November 23rd 2010: Too Busy

I am far too busy to even consider talking to any of you. Now leave my office and never return. I have an urgent conference call to make to a man in San Francisco about a new Business Deal involving some very boring details. This took an unreasonably long time to draw considering. I like it though. It's got a good ratio of black to white in the imagery I think, maybe it would of been better to tie the other elements in a bit more but there you go. Inspired by (and ideas partially stolen from) Matthew green.

September 3rd 2010: Harpie Girl

Beware the breasts. They will tempt you. Ha.
I like this highlight situation around the main image.
I'm also pretty pleased with the font for something I made up.

May 14th 2010: L.A. Bitch

Erm... REALLY dodgy drawing. This is what happens when I don't sketch things in pencil first. You get silly lines.
