Section 2 of 3 of 'The Butcher' got drawn up today, that's the typography. I also sketched the 3rd section to be filled tomorrow and then I can begin my Ai work.

Killing Them Softly 1: Scoot McNairy

So i've been absent for quite some time. I burnt out hard, got lazy, threw a lot of paper in the bin and then moved flat so I've got my excuses. But time to get back to it. I got inspired by the film Killing Them Softly. It was so good, and the characters were so intense that I just wanted to draw them all. Didn't know this guy before I watched it but he is an absolutely incredible actor. Scoot McNairy. A fair few mistakes, but not bad for the first thing i've drawn in nearly 6 months.

It occurred to me last night that I don't think I've done any work that wasn't for uni in months. Decided to change that. It was so much fun to do something completely diffferent to what I've been working on solidly. I remember why I like drawing again now.

Beware the wolf, for he comes for you tonight,

Trying out some new style ideas. I'm feeling the colour on black situation, the eyeball amulet, chain, hourglass, bones, bandages and the circle with the runes in are all working for me. The wolf head I don't think is quite as strong. The crosses and spikey bits I should of spent more time over. If it was just the amulet & hourglass with the bones, and then the runes around the eye I think it would work. Might draw that up.

Professional Project: Front Cover Mock Up

One of the ideas that arose at the last crit was a front cover idea. Basically since I've used so many styles & techniques of illustration in the project, to reflect this in the cover design by illustrating my name using various methods/styles of typography. Sounded good. Here's my letters.

 

Here's the end result that took far too long. This would be printed onto brown paper/card/backing so it wouldn't seem quite as plain as it does here. I think I worked this one out quite well considering types not really my fortay. Got a mix of hand rendered and digital characters, bold and weaker, positive and negative, pencil and pen, simple and ellaborate. I might play around with it a bit more as at the moment the central 'E' is a little bit lost in between all the bolder letters, could sort this out by dropping some of the blacks to greys to give the type as a whole some more mid-tones. I'm also playing around with some photo work which I might substitute in at a later point for one of the letters. But for now, this is what I've got.

Professional Project: Illustration Number Ten - Hessonite

Hessonite is a semi-precious stone. So I immediately thought of jewelery and then fashion illustration. So that's the style I went for.

I thought the hessonite should stand out more so I desaturated the clothing. Not sure if I like it.

Removed the splodges. Not sure if I like this either. I'll pick one later.

Professional Project: Illustration (set) Number 4 - Bushido

Bushido is the name for the code of conduct that Samurai warriors adhered to. It was comprised of seven main virtues. If a Samurai was to break the code and disgrace himself, the only way to regain his honor would be through ritual suicide. The seven virtues were:

The symbols on each illustration are the Japanese symbols for each of the virtues. I wanted to keep the colour scheme really simple to reflect old japanese art. The style is also picked to reflect this, although I decided to use less detail so as to leave block areas of colour. I looked at old Japanese drawings of Samurai and took the poses from these.

Professional Project: Illustration Number Three - Hermes

 

Hermes

If you're wandering what happened to Number Two, it's still being made. This one came from Terry Pratchett's 'Making Money' through some random words and ended up at Hermes. I had a look at those old Greek jars with the black imagery on them so that's where I took the colours and sort of the style from, lots of black blocking.

Professional Project: Illustration One - Rio Carnival

 

The first illustartion for my professional project is complete.

I'd say my process for generating random subject material seems to be working on that one. This is done almost entirely in marker pens. I bought some Letraset ones. They are amazing. Outlines in fineliner and background in black ink. I think this is a good start to the project and I am pleased with the outcome. It reflects the mood of the carnival in the colours. I tried to input some influence from Brazilian artists work that I looked at, but this mainly just came through in colour as their styles were so far removed from mine that it would have gone totally wrong had I tried to go any further.

More Weaving

More web design today. 

Bio page. Think this has worked really well. I like having an image to one side of the page and then the white space and text on the other side, this fits in really well with the whole feel of my site. I wasn't too sure what to write in my bio so I've left it a little generic and chatty for now. It works. I might change it at a later date if I decide I don't like it but I think it describes me pretty well. I think the text align right works well here as it sits against the imagery and leaves the space on the left

Contact page. I went with the image to the side, content on the other to keep the theme going throughout.  Although I've switched the sides over because I wanted the lion facing inwards like the masked man is on the other page. I think the imagery works well but there's not a lot I could really do with the form as it needs to be pretty standard for people to be able to use it effectively. I might align the text to the left though. It looks a little disjointed in the middle. There were a few other little niggles that needed working out today, finally got my email link at the bottom working. Added the copyright line to the bottom of each page with the © symbol (alt g on a mac, new found hot key). The main problem though was that I discovered that on my gallery pages when you click a thumbnail the image was stretched across the entire main image box regardless of size. This was solved by removing all height/width measurements from the placeholder image as this was effecting all the other images. Then hooked up all my links at the bottom of the page. The only thing left to do now is create my 'design' gallery and then upload and check everything works.
