January 30th 2010: Phil Collins
It's Phil Collins Birthday today. I'm liking this weird birthday thing thats going on. Wikipedia is the source of all knowledge for the new generation. Anyway. I like this weird ass style aswell. Grab a new rollerball. A nice thick one that is all sticky when you start drawing. Then just draw some crazy lines and try and be as continuous as possible. Yeah.

New Project: Animation
So a couple of days ago we were given our new brief which is to create an animation lasting between 30 and 90 seconds that puts across a point and has to be based on statistics. We've started flash tutorials and it all jsut came flooding back to me... So I'm basing mine around speeches by Mumia Abu Jamal, made from his cell on death row, about the American justice system.
The main statistic I am looking at is that 23% of the worlds incarcerated are in the US when they only have 5% of the worlds population. I thought that was interesting.
I instantly wanted to try and use various different methods of animation so I've set to work on some illustrated frames and MY GOD this is tedious. I've been drawing the same thing over and over for about 3 hours now and I'm getting close to half way. wonderful.
A bit behind on the uploads for my Daily effort but they have been done and they do include an exploded whale.

Basic Flash
Basic flash lessons. They started off very basic indeed looking at changing the size of the stage, creating and editing objects etc. Then we learned how to create movie clip objects and how to animate them easily going across the screen/changing shape using motion/shape tweens as well as adding filters/effects to them.

January 26th 2010: The Legend Of The Exploding Whale
So on the 26th January 2004 in the town of Tainan, Taiwan; a beached (and dead) sperm whale was craned onto a flatbed and driven away. It exploded in the middle of the town due to a build up of gas caused by its decomposition. Amazing.
The drawing is pretty bad but the idea of an exploding whale...

Evaluation
So I think the Poster design worked well overall. I was trying to play off of fashion advertisement techniques in order to draw in the right audience, which i think has worked quite well throught he use of the clothing being the main focus. I think the composition has also helped here as there is just the clothing I think it empahsises this further by excluding the figure. I also like the way that the tag leads the viewers eye down and to the start of the copy. I think the tag line works really well as it appeals to those younger people, who I would class as quite a fashion conscious group on whole, and links in with a double meaning trying to get people to think about where their clothes are coming from. The tag being changed from 'me' to 'us' I think was definately a good idea as it is not such a victimising approach, and doesn't try emotional blackmail as so many other charity ad campaigns do, instead it offers the opportunity to join a community of people trying to change the way sweatshops are run which I think is a much more effective method. The smaller copy under the tagline reinforces this well I think to add a little more information about the cause and then the response mechanism has been added underneath the logo. I think that overall it is an effective charity ad poster as it is not a typical style not does it give a typical message so I think young people might be more inclined to respond to it.

CMYK made the colours change a lot but I like the way it turned out.
Pretty self explanatory.

Oh well.

More WOW Stuff.
So another crit occured. The last before hand in and I'm pretty much there now, a few more tweaks are needed. The main one being The typeface on the label. Needs to be digital apparently.
Here we go.
Quite simple really. I don't think it's anywhere near as effective but apparently this is what I need to do.
I'm a bit behind on posting my one a day drawings due to this project but I'll update them later, for all both of you that are keeping up with it. Ha.

Done. I've had enough now.
No more messing about on computers moving logos/text/editing photos please.
This is the end result of all the work and stuff.
go team.
I am well aware it looks alot like the previous version.
It's supposed to. I didn't want to change it too much as I liked it in the first place.

January 14th 2010: Is something getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Following on from yesterdays birthday theme, today is Dave Grohl's 41st.
Which for some reason has inspired me to listen to Foo Fighters. This CDs been on my shelf for like...4 years since it was last played. Oh well.
This is a 2 minute ink brush portrait I did in the dark. Aha.
Still trying my hand at speed drawing.
The nose is too wide to be grohl but amusingly that makes it look just like Disco Banks.
Go Disco.

Damn you critique
So we had a crit on our poster designs and I need to change it to "help US" which is going to take ages in itself. I was also told that the poster should be in photographic form rather than the illustration I did. Because that way it will be exactly the same as everyone elses... does not bode well.
Anyway. Back to the drawing board.

January 13th 2010: Madness
I didn't know what to draw today so I searched todays date and apparently its Sugg's Birthday.
I know it's a little dodgy, bit im trying to improve my quick drawing skills, so there may be a few more of these on the way. I want to be able to draw without sketches everything out 20 times with a pencil first, inking it, tipexing and inking again. Its aggro.

She used to be such a sweet young girl, she did all her homework and chores on time, she never complained or made a fuss.
Honestly, I really don't know what's gotten into her lately.

Posterrrr update y'all.
So, basically, some of them didn't work so well. Others did though.
Heres a mixture of the ones i've put together.
These two were the christmas based poster designs.
Overall i don't think these two have worked fantasticly well.
I tried to use the white in the corner to set the text on but it was too short further up where i wanted to put it, so I had to place it further down which hasn't really worked too well.
The label also doesn't really stand out that much.
These ones are done on an illustration that I did in pen and coloured ink. I think these ones have worked alot better than the xmas versions. In particular I like the one on the right as I think the logo and text sit better with the imagery and there is an extra line which explains the poster a little more which the left hand picture does not have. I think the one on the left works less as the text comes too close to the label and distracts from it wheras the one on the right works really well as both the logo and the label jump out of the image.

When I discussed my work with a working designer he said to make it as simple as possible so here it is. The basic photo with a logo. Straight out simple. I think that both of these give a really good effect but the left hand looks perhaps a little too simple as the logo looks like its floating wheras on the right the text ties the label and the logo together nicely. The text also adds explanation so I think it is more effective. I also like the layout of the big and small point size type. Good times.
